Since its introduction more than 25 years ago, IVF (in vitro fertilization) has gotten so precise that today more than 40 percent of successful IVF treatments result in twinning. This is causing some in the medical community to put a halt to the two, three, and even four embryo transfer. Instead, doctors are recommending single embryo transfer (S.E.T.).
According to a recent study, full-term, first-born twins delivered by caesarean section have a higher risk for developing childhood asthma than babies born vaginally. Although the reasons are still unclear, researchers believe that when an infant comes into contact with a mother’s vaginal flora in the birth canal during delivery that it may help develop a healthy immune system thereby protecting the infant from childhood asthma.
